Student Abstracts for Harkness Award

Current students and 2015 graduates are invited to submit an abstract of a paper for the Janet A. Harkness Award.  The paper must be related to a multinational, multicultural or multilingual topic.  The award is $750 and travel expenses to present the paper next May in Austin, TX. SNaPP Lab Seeking Research Assistant Applications, Deadline 8/21/15

Are you interested in political behavior, the study of why people think, act, and feel the way they do about politics? Would you like to be involved in collaborative research with other students, working directly with a professor? Applications to become a research assistant in the Social Networks and Political Psychology (SNaPP) Lab are now being accepted.

University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology

MPSM is a program where students learn the science of surveys. Our students pursue their Master’s or PhD degree. MPSM brings together faculty and scientists from the social and behavioral sciences in the college of Literature, Science, and the Arts; the School or Public Health; and the institute for Social Research. Moreover, the quantitative strengths of disciplines such as communication studies, economics, education, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics are integral to the empirical underpinnings of the program.

Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series (June 22-26)

Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series (June 22-26)

Sponsored by the National Consortium for Data Science (NCDS), the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), and the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, the “Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series” is a week-long series of classes for researchers, data analysts, and other professionals who wish to increase their skills in data studies and integrate data science methods into their research designs and skill sets. Scholars, analysts, and researchers from all disciplines and industries are welcome. Both one- and two-day courses will be offered; participants are welcome to register for one, two, or three classes. Classes will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Data Matters series is structured in three blocks: June 22-23, June 24, and June 25-26. Three to four courses are offered concurrently in each block. You will be able to choose only one course from each block. Courses are independent of each other; there is no predetermined sequence.

ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is pleased to announce the 2015 Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research. In 2015, the ICPSR Summer Program will offer 90 courses on a variety of topics in statistical methods, quantitative reasoning, data analysis, research design, and substantive topics.

As many subscribers to this listserv know, the Summer Program offers two four-week sessions that take place in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the University of Michigan campus. Workshops and lectures in our four-week sessions meet for one to two hours daily, Monday through Friday. Our four-week sessions provide a unique opportunity to connect with participants from all over the world.

Additionally, from May through August, the Summer Program will offer fifty (50) three- to five-day workshops that will take place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as Amherst, Massachusetts; Berkeley, California; Boulder, Colorado; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Manhattan, New York; and Montreal, Quebec. Our 2015 lineup of three- to five-day workshops includes many popular, returning courses in network analysis, multilevel modeling, and Bayesian analysis, as well as several new short workshops.

4th Annual IPSA-NUS Summer School for Social Science Research Methods

The 4th Annual IPSA-NUS Summer School for Social Science Research Methods will be held at the National University of Singapore, June 9-18, 2015.

This year’s Methods School offers thirteen quantitative, qualitative, and formal methods courses, such as Bayesian Analysis, Case Study Analysis, Experimental Methods, Game Theory, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Mixed Methods, QCA, and Quantitative Text Analysis. All courses are taught by highly experienced international faculty from the U.S. and Europe and provide participants with rigorous, hands-on training in state-of-the-art research methods.

VCU Political Science Research Conference

VCU Political Science is seeking papers and proposals for its upcoming research conference on April 11, 2014.

Undergraduate and junior graduate students are invited to submit proposals to present completed research papers/projects, research-in-progress, or roundtable discussions on any topic related to the general fields of government, international, and public affairs. Students from colleges and universities in and around Virginia as well as overseas colleagues are invited to submit proposals as well. We invite faculty and experts from VCU and other institutions to chair and serve as discussants; each presenter will have 10-15 minutes to speak. The VCU Political Science program offers concentrated study in American Government, Public Policy, International Relations, Comparative Government and Politics, Political Theory and Research Methods, with strong connections to Sociology, Economics, and History, allowing for a wide array of possible paper proposals.

This is your chance to share your interests with faculty and other students, to gain experience presenting your work in a professional conference environment, and to receive useful and constructive feedback on your research.

Proposals should contain your name and e-mail address, your school and your major, the title of your proposed presentation, and a single paragraph describing your work. The deadline for submissions is Midnight, Friday, March 21, 2014. Please e-mail your submissions to studentconference2014@gmail.com . Those selected to participate will be notified on a rolling basis by e-mail and all replies by no later than Wednesday, March 26, 2014. The one-day conference will also include additional panels on internships and careers in government and foreign affairs, a panel with information on graduate schools, and a buffet lunch served for all presenters and panelists in the afternoon.
