The 2018 Summer Institute in Political Psychology is now accepting Applications

The Summer Institute in Political Psychology will take place at Stanford University from August 5 – August 25, 2018. The Summer Institute offers 3 weeks of intensive training in political psychology. Political psychology is an exciting and thriving field that explores the origins of political behavior and the causes of political events, with a special focus on the psychological mechanisms at work. The 2018 SIPP curriculum is designed to (1) provide broad exposure to theories, empirical findings, and research traditions; (2) illustrate successful cross-disciplinary research and integration; (3) enhance methodological pluralism; and (4) strengthen networks among scholars from around the world. SIPP activities will include lectures by world class faculty, discussion groups, research/interest group meetings, group projects, and an array of social activities. Some of the topics covered in past SIPP programs include public attitudes and attitude change, race relations, conflict and dispute resolution, voting and elections, international conflict, decision-making, moral disengagement and violence, social networks, activism and social protest, political socialization, justice, and many more.

Department of Defense Opportunities for Recent Grads

The Department of Defense is looking for recent graduates to fill positions at Fort Eustis. Pay would be very competitive (likely comparable to a starting professorship depending on qualifications) and likely with 25% travel to teach. Traveling would generally be limited to the contiguous United States and always in safe places. Applications would preferably have a solid working knowledge of SNA and the creativity to apply it to various Army & Joint problems sets (both friendly and threat focused). Having an existing security clearance is a plus, but by no means required. Someone with a networks & OB-background, data experience, who

Research Assistant Positions — (International) Political Economy of Development

Are you interested in international political economy? Have a passion for Development? Or a regional interest in Latin America? What about Africa? Then consider applying to these research assistant (RA) opportunities with incoming Government Professor Eric Arias. Tasks include data collection and management for different projects, such as (i) analyzing the effects of US monetary policy on patronage in the developing world (cross-country + within-country analyses), (ii) an RCT in Medellin examining the effect of community meetings among citizens and police, (iii) an RCT in Burkina Faso to analyze the effect of edutainment soap-operas as a tool to countering violent extremism. The RA(s) will work closely with Eric and gain valuable experience on research design in both observational and experimental work. Desired qualifications (not applicable to all projects) include data collection and data management skills (e.g., Excel and Stata); geospatial analysis (GIS in R), but above all, be very detail-oriented and independent. Call for Papers: 2018 Virginia Social Science Association (VSSA) Annual Conference

 

The Virginia Social Science Association (VSSA) is calling for paper submissions for its annual conference. The theme of the conference this year is Symbolism, Discourse, and Inclusivity: Beyond Rhetoric. Those with papers related to this theme are encouraged to apply, but papers from other social science disciplines will still be considered. The conference will hold competitions for best undergraduate and best graduate papers. The winner of the graduate award will receive $500 and the undergraduate award winner will receive $250. To enter either of these competitions, use this form. To be considered for the conference, submit a one page panel or paper proposal by 5:00 p.m. on February 12, 2018 using this form.


Government Department Research Assistant Position: Fall 2017 – Spring 2018

 
If you’re interested in global environmental issues, check out this research assistant position (RA) with Government Professor S. P. Harish, who is leading an interdisciplinary team researching global coal plant infrastructure. The project aims to compile a global geospatial database of coal plants to enable rigorous research on the costs and benefits of coal plant construction. RAs will gain valuable research experience and the opportunity to interact with experts and faculty members in economics, political science, environmental science, and energy policy. Position responsibilities include basic statistical and quantitative research, including data collection, processing and consolidation. Desired qualifications include data management skills and experience with geospatial software (ArcGIS). The RA must be able to work both fall and spring semesters for approximately ten hours a week. Research Assistant Position, Singaporean Text Analysis

Do you want to work on a research project on the text analysis of Singaporean parliamentary speeches? We are looking for a diligent research assistant (RA) who pays attention to detail and can work with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and R. The initial task involves cleaning the various parliamentary speeches into a format that can be used for text analysis. Once this is complete, the RA will assist in conducting various analyses with the parliamentary text. The expected workload is about 10 hrs/week. At the end of the project, the RA can expect to learn the ins-and-outs of conducting text analysis on parliamentary speeches.
